How to: Generate a Business Intelligence Project
After you create perspectives to identify the tables that contain the measures and dimensions for your cubes, you can generate a Business Intelligence (BI) project so that you can work with the cubes in SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS).

|
If you use the following procedure to generate a new BI project using the perspectives for the default cubes provided by Microsoft Dynamics AX, your project will not contain additional elements, such as KPIs and calculated measures, that were defined for the cubes. However, in BIDS you can generate a BI project from an existing database. In doing this, you can capture the additional elements like KPIs and calculated measures that exist in the database and make customizations to those elements. For more information about generating a BI project from an existing database, see How to: Create an Analysis Services Project Based on an Existing Analysis Services Database (SQL Server 2005 Books Online). |
The following procedure explains how to generate a new BI project from one or more perspectives in Microsoft Dynamics AX.
To generate a BI project
-
Set BI project generation options. For more information, see How to: Set Options for Generating Business Intelligence Projects.
-
Do one of the following:
-
Click Generate BI project on the Business Intelligence project generation options form from step 1.
-
On the Microsoft Dynamics AX menu, point to Tools, point to Business Intelligence (BI) tools, and then click Generate BI project.
The Generate a Business Intelligence project form displays.
-
-
In the Folder field, specify a location for the BI project files. You can click the folder icon to browse and select the folder.
Caution When generating a BI project, be sure that the project is placed in a secure location. The default location for a BI project that is generated is \My Documents\AnalysisServicesProjects. Changing the default location may result in a BI project residing in a location that is not secure.
-
In the Project name field, type a name for the BI project.
-
Select the Open generated project check box if you want the BI project to open in SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio immediately after it is generated.
-
Select the perspectives that you want to include in the BI project. Each perspective represents a cube. You can have more than one cube in a BI project.
Note The Usage property for a perspective determines whether a perspective represents a cube and can be used to generate a BI project. Only perspectives that have the Usage property set to OLAP or Both display in the list. If you do not see your perspective in the list, check the setting for the Usage property on the perspective.
-
Click OK to generate the project.
