Implementing SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)

Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) can be used to extract a subset of data from one database and load it to another database. Microsoft Dynamics Mobile solutions use SSIS to extract data from specific tables and fields in a Microsoft Dynamics AX or Microsoft Dynamics NAV database, and then map this data to tables and fields in the mobile staging database. Mobile devices can then synchronize with the mobile staging database to retrieve the latest data. The database extraction is accomplished by configuring and running an SSIS package on the mobile staging database. An SSIS package is included with Microsoft Dynamics Mobile - Device Components and installs with Mobile Sales The SSIS package is different for each version of Microsoft Dynamics AX and Microsoft Dynamics NAV, and whether you use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or use Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

For more information about installing Mobile Sales, see How to: Install Microsoft Dynamics Mobile - Device Components.

The following diagram illustrates where in the architecture the components and configuration that are associated with the implementation of SSIS package occur.

You can modify the SSIS package to remove unnecessary tables and fields. Microsoft SQL Server Integration Services must be installed to perform any modifications to the SSIS package.

It is not a requirement to use SSIS for populating data to the mobile staging database. Any preferred method can be used as an alternative, such as placing triggers on the business solution database. It is also possible to choose a combination of different methods, depending on the specific requirements.
