Navigate the template hierarchy using the breadcrumb bar

When you are in the editing scope of a style or template in Expression Blend, a breadcrumb navigation bar appears at the upper left of the artboard.

Breadcrumb bar with template-editing mode selected

The breadcrumb bar appears for any selected object that can have a custom style or template applied to it.

  • By clicking the buttons on the breadcrumb bar, you can quickly move through template-editing mode, style-editing mode, and object-editing scope for the selected object.

  1. Select an object on the artboard or in the Objects and Timeline panel that supports styles and templates. For example, select a button.

  2. At the top of the artboard, select the breadcrumb button that appears.

If the object does not support styles or templates, the breadcrumb button for the object is unavailable.

  3. From the pop-up menu that appears below the breadcrumb, select which kind of resource to create.

For information about how to create styles and templates, see Create a style, Create or modify a template, and see the section on "The difference between styles and templates" in the Styling a control that supports templates.
