Attach or detach a Dynamic Web Template

To use a Dynamic Web Template (DWT), you attach it to web pages. Attaching a DWT dims most options on the General, Formatting, Advanced, and Language tabs of the Page Properties dialog box in the page to which the DWT is attached. If you want to change these settings, modify the template, and let Microsoft Expression Web update the attached pages. If this would affect more pages than you want, you probably need two DWTs — one for each set of appearance settings — instead of one.

To attach pages to a Dynamic Web Template

  1. In the Folder List panel, select the file(s) that you want to attach to the DWT. To select multiple files, press CTRL and hold, and then click the files that you want to attach.

  2. On the Format menu, point to Dynamic Web Template, and then click Attach Dynamic Web Template.

  3. Locate and click the DWT you want to attach, and then click Open.

If the body of a selected web page contains content, the Match Editable Regions dialog box appears. The dialog box displays the default settings for mapping content from the body of the web page to editable regions specified by the DWT. The Old column lists content in the body of the web page. The New column lists editable regions specified by the template.

  4. In the Match Editable Regions dialog box, do one of the following:

    • To move all of the content in the body of the web page to the default editable region, click OK. If the default editable region contains content, that content is replaced with the content in the web page.

    • To move all of the content in the body of the web page to a specific editable region, click (Body), and then click Modify. In the New Region list, click the editable region you want to move the content to. If you click (none), the content is removed from the web page.

    • To maintain all of the content and structure of the web page, click Skip Current Page. The template is not attached to the page.

To detach web pages from a Dynamic Web Template

  1. In the Folder List panel, select the file(s) that you want to detach from the DWT. To select multiple files, press CTRL and hold, and then click the files that you want to detach.

  2. On the Format menu, point to Dynamic Web Template, and then click Detach from Dynamic Web Template.

    Note

If you detach a DWT from one or more pages in a site, you remove only the formatting provided by the template — the content is not automatically removed from those pages. To remove the content from those pages, select and replace the residual text and page elements.
