Navigate your document

The two primary methods for navigating your document are scrolling (or panning) and changing the view magnification (or zooming).

Scrolling

The workspace in Microsoft Expression Design is essentially boundless, depending on how far from the document page you position an object. You have four ways to scroll around your file.

To scroll around the workspace

  • Use one of the following methods:

    • In the scroll bars on the right side and bottom of the document, drag a scroll handle or click a scroll bar arrow to move in that direction.

The workspace is essentially limitless, and you'll notice that when you reach the limit of the scroll bar, it immediately updates to allow you to scroll farther.

    • In the Toolbox, drag the Pan Cc294721.3024f965-97dd-4826-95b4-57cd6c24e34b(en-us,Expression.40).png tool (or press H) around the workspace.

Zooming

You can zoom in to any part of the view area up to 6,400 percent (64x normal) or zoom out to about 3 percent (0.03x). You can use several methods to zoom in and out of your file.

To zoom in or out using the Zoom tool

  • In the Toolbox, select the Zoom Cc294721.12a7b35e-40e4-46b2-9b55-f76ba1295b21(en-us,Expression.40).png tool, and do one of the following:

    • Click anywhere in the view area to zoom in on that position. To zoom out, hold down the ALT key when you click.

    • Drag the Zoom tool to zoom in on a specific area. Repeat to zoom in more closely.

      Note

This works for zoom in only, not for zoom out.

    • Press Z.

    • To temporarily change to the Zoom tool, hold down CTRL+SPACEBAR to zoom in or CTRL+ALT+SPACEBAR to zoom out.

To zoom in or out using the Zoom drop-down list

  • At the lower left of the image window, click the arrow next to the Zoom number to display the Zoom drop-down list, and then click the magnification number you want.

To zoom in or out using the mouse wheel

  • Use one of the following methods:

    • To zoom in to the current location of your pointer, rotate your mouse wheel forward.

    • To zoom out from the current location of your pointer, rotate your mouse wheel backward.

    • To zoom in or out from the center point of the view area (the center of what is visible on the screen), on the Edit menu, point to Options, click General, and then clear the Mouse wheel zoom about mouse position option.

To zoom in or out using menu commands and keyboard shortcuts

  • On the View menu, click one of the following options:

    • Zoom In (or press CTRL+PLUS SIGN [+]) to zoom in, or click ZoomOut**** (or press CTRL+MINUS SIGN [-]) to zoom out, based on the center of the visible screen.

    • Zoom on Selection to zoom to the highest magnification level at which one or more currently selected objects can be fully shown.

    • Fit to Screen (or press CTRL+0) to zoom to the highest magnification level at which all visible objects in your document can be shown. You can also double-click the Zoom tool, which does the same thing. This is helpful for getting the "big picture."

    • Click Actual Size (or press CTRL+1) to return to a 100 percent view. You can also zoom to a 100 percent view by double-clicking the Pan tool.

    • Click Center View to zoom to a 100 percent view and center the artboard in the window.
