Trim and cut video

To refine and streamline your video, you can perform any number of cut edits well as trim both the original in and out points of the video and the in and out points of your cuts. Though all your cuts are immediately applied, you can choose to display and view the cut sections, or clips, in case you want to restore or adjust them. If you choose to display the clips, the Microsoft Expression Encoder timeline displays them in red.

Cutting a video in Expression Encoder involves splitting the video, and then either trimming or deleting the resulting clips. You can perform cuts either in the Timeline or in the Clips section of the Enhance panel. If you perform your cuts in the Clips section, you will see a listing of the in and out points of each clip that you create.

Note

You can only edit and trim your main video. You cannot adjust leader or trailer videos.

To cut a section of video

  1. On the Timeline, drag the playhead to the point where you want to perform the first cut. You can preview the video in the viewing area.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • Right-click the playhead and, on the shortcut menu, click Add Edit.

    • Click the Enhance tab and expand the Clip Edits section (if the Enhance tab is not visible, then, on the Window menu, click Enhance). In the Clips section, click Add.

    • Below the Timeline, click the Add a cut button.

  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to create subsequent cuts.

  4. Do one of the following:

    • On the Timeline, drag the playhead to the clip that you want to remove. Then, right-click the playhead and, on the shortcut menu, click Remove Clip or, below the Timeline, click the Remove button.

    • In the Clips section, click the range of time that you want to remove, and then click Remove Clip.

  5. If you want to remove an edit, in the Clips section, click the range of time corresponding to the edit you want to remove, or, below the Timeline, click one of the Go to next edit or marker buttons. This moves the playhead to the start time of the edit. Click Remove Edit.

To view cut clip sections

  • Below the Timeline, click the Show cut regions of clips icon. The cut clips appear in red on the Timeline. If you playback the video when Show cut regions of clips is on, the effect of the cut will not be evident in the video playback. In order to view the cut during playback, you must turn off Show cut regions of clips by clicking the icon again.

To trim a video

  1. On the Timeline, position the cursor over the in or out point of either a cut or the entire video. Note the right- or left-facing trim handles that appear at each cut on either end of the clip.

  2. When the trim handles appear, drag the cut to trim the clip. You cannot extend the in or out point of a clip past the initial boundaries of the clip.
