Create log files

If you want to keep a record of all the jobs that you process, you can enable logging. You can specify which data you want Microsoft Expression Encoder to put in the log files, and set a limit on the size of the log files. Expression Encoder compiles log files on a daily basis, not on a job-by-job basis, so that although Expression Encoder logs each job, it does so in only one file per day. On the following day, Expression Encoder archives the previous day's log file and begins another.

To specify log file preferences

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

  2. Click Logging.

  3. To create a log of your encoding jobs, select the Generate log files check box.

  4. To browse to a location where you want to store your log files, click Browse The browse button.

  5. To enter a limit on how large (in megabytes) the log files can become, select the Max size of logs check box and type a number in the box. Alternatively, you can click the box and drag up or right to increase the value, or drag left or down to decrease the value. When your log files reach this limit, Expression Encoder deletes the oldest log files.

  6. In the list of logging categories, select the check box next to the parameter that you want to be included in the log file. To show only the logging categories that are displayed by default, click Default. To select the whole list, click All. To clear the whole list, click None.

  7. Click OK.
