Edit a Silverlight template

You can easily edit the Microsoft Silverlight templates included with Microsoft Expression Encoder in Microsoft Expression Blend, in Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 , or in a text editor such as Notepad. If you have Expression Blend or Visual Studio 2010 installed on your computer, you can open your templates in Expression Encoder. Otherwise, you can edit your templates in Notepad or another text editor. After you save the template in whichever application you modified it in, you can immediately use it in your encoding job.

To edit a template in Expression Blend or Visual Studio 2010

  1. In Expression Encoder, if you can't see the Templates panel, on the Window menu, click Templates.

  2. On the Template menu, click the name of a Silverlight template.

  3. On the Output options menu Cc294545.c043ff11-e91a-4d07-bccb-0d6f50e7d3cb(en-us,Expression.40).png, do one of the following:

    • Point to Edit template in and click either Expression Blend or Visual Studio to open the original template in Expression Blend or Visual Studio 2010. Any changes you make will affect the original template. This option is available only for custom templates.

    • Point to Edit copy of template in and click either Expression Blend or Visual Studio. In the Save Template box, type a filename, and then click OK. This opens a copy of the template in either Expression Blend or Visual Studio 2010, depending on your choice, thereby preserving the original template. Expression Encoder saves the copy in "\Users\[username]\My Documents\Expression\Expression Encoder\Templates".

For more information about working in Expression Blend or in Visual Studio 2010, see the User Guides of those products.

  4. Make your changes in Expression Blend or Visual Studio 2010, and then save the file. When you return to Expression Encoder, the Preview window will display the edited template. You can then use the template for future encoding.

To edit a template in a text editor

  1. On your local hard disk drive, locate the template folder. If you chose the default installation, the template folder will be located in "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Expression\Encoder 4\Templates\[application language]". Otherwise, the templates will be in the Templates folder in the location where you installed the application.

  2. Open the folder that corresponds to your template name.

  3. Right-click the Default.html file, point to Open With, and do one of the following:

    • To edit the file in Notepad, click Notepad.

    • To edit the file in another text editor, either click Default Program and then click one of the pictured applications, or click Browse to locate the text editor of your choice.
