Edit a Silverlight template

You can easily edit the Silverlight templates included with Microsoft Expression Encoder either in Microsoft Expression Blend 2 or in a text editor such as Microsoft Notepad. If you have Expression Blend 2 installed on your computer, you can open your templates directly from Expression Encoder. Otherwise, you can open the template in Notepad or another text editor and edit it there. Once you save the template in whichever application you modified it in, you can immediately use it in your encoding job.

To edit your template in Expression Blend

  1. If you cannot see the Output panel, on the Window menu, click Output.

  2. Click the Job Output arrow to expand the panel.

  3. On the Template menu, click a Silverlight template name.

  4. Click the white square to the left of the Template menu Cc294545.66f6e7cc-798f-4012-8b02-4316e0b5a74a(en-us,Expression.10).png.

  5. Do one of the following to open Expression Blend 2:

    • Click Edit copy in Expression Blend. In the Rename Template box, enter a filename and click Open. This opens a copy of the template in Expression Blend 2, thereby preserving the original template. Expression Encoder saves the copy in \Users\[username]\Expression\Expression Encoder\Templates.

    • Click Edit in Expression Blend to open the original template in Expression Blend 2. Any changes you make will affect the original template. This option is available only for custom templates.

Once you are working in Expression Blend 2, click the Project tab and choose the Expression Encoder project file to begin working on your project. For more information on working in Expression Blend 2, see Expression Blend 2 Help.

  6. Make your changes in Expression Blend 2 and then save the file. When you return to Expression Encoder, the Preview window will display the edited template. You can then use the template for future encoding.

To edit your template in a text editor

  1. On your local drive, locate the template folder. If you chose the default installation, the template folder will be located at C:\Program Files\Microsoft Expression Encoder 2\Templates\en. Otherwise, the templates will be in the Templates folder in the location where you installed the application.

  2. Open the folder that corresponds to your template name.

  3. Right-click the Default.html file and, on the shortcut menu, point to Open With and do one of the following:

    • To edit the file in Notepad, click Notepad.

    • To edit the file in a text editor of your choice, click Default Program and then click one of the pictured applications, or click Browse to locate the HTML editing application of your choice.
