1.5.1 Common Requirements

The SMB DFS referral request uses the TRANS2_GET_DFS_REFERRAL SMB message, as specified in [MS-SMB]. This is available only in SMB versions beginning with NT LAN Manager 0.12. The SMB2 DFS referral request uses the FSCTL_DFS_GET_REFERRALS IOCTL or the FSCTL_DFS_GET_REFERRALS_EX IOCTL, as specified in [MS-SMB2].

The DFS: Namespace Referral Protocol requires that the DFS namespace, which is accessed by both the DFS client and the DFS metadata that this protocol uses, has already been set up, possibly through the Distributed File System (DFS): Namespace Management Protocol as specified in [MS-DFSNM]. The protocol also requires that the shares are already set up for a DFS namespace's DFS root and link targets, along with SYSVOL/NETLOGON referral targets when used in domain environments. These shares can be set up as specified in [MS-SRVS].

The DFS: Namespace Referral Protocol defines no security parameters beyond those of its SMB transport.
