Convert.ToInt16 Method (Int32)

Converts the value of the specified 32-bit signed integer to an equivalent 16-bit signed integer.

Namespace:  System
Assembly:  mscorlib (in mscorlib.dll)

Public Shared Function ToInt16 ( _
	value As Integer _
) As Short
Dim value As Integer
Dim returnValue As Short

returnValue = Convert.ToInt16(value)

Type: System.Int32

The 32-bit signed integer to convert.

Return Value

Type: System.Int16
The 16-bit signed integer equivalent of value.

value is greater than Int16.MaxValue or less than Int16.MinValue.

The following example attempts to convert each element in an array of integers to a 16-bit signed integer.

Dim numbers() As Integer = { Int32.MinValue, -1, 0, 121, 340, Int32.MaxValue }
Dim result As Short

For Each number As Integer In numbers
      result = Convert.ToInt16(number)
      Console.WriteLine("Converted the {0} value {1} to a {2} value {3}.", _
                        number.GetType().Name, number, _
                        result.GetType().Name, result)
   Catch e As OverflowException
      Console.WriteLine("The {0} value {1} is outside the range of the Int16 type.", _
                        number.GetType().Name, number)
   End Try
' The example displays the following output:
' The Int32 value -2147483648 is outside the range of the Int16 type.
'    Converted the Int32 value -1 to a Int16 value -1.
'    Converted the Int32 value 0 to a Int16 value 0.
'    Converted the Int32 value 121 to a Int16 value 121.
'    Converted the Int32 value 340 to a Int16 value 340.
' The Int32 value 2147483647 is outside the range of the Int16 type.
