Configuring the Mobile Staging Database and SQL Server Replication

The mobile staging database is a Microsoft SQL Server 2005 database that contains a subset of tables and data extracted from the business solution database. The replicated data is supplied to the mobile application in the required format. The reference database on the client is updated using merge replication from the mobile staging database on the SQL Server instance. The mobile staging database is updated using SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS). Both replication processes are unidirectional. For more information, see How to: Run the SSIS Package to Update the Mobile Staging Database. The following figure illustrates the mobile staging database and its components within the mobile architecture.

For initial setup, merge replication applies snapshots. Future replications occur based on the changes that take place during transactions. For more information, see How Snapshot Replication Works.

The mobile staging database server contains business data and makes this data available to the mobile user. The tables in the mobile staging database are filtered to display only a subset of the data to the mobile user. For details on filtered tables, see Create Mobile Staging Database Publication Script.

Use the procedures in this section to make the required configurations for the mobile staging database and SQL Server replication. This section also provides recommendations for configuring the database server and lists the prerequisites required to run the scripts provided with the mobile application’s staging database (including database objects and publication).
