Create dimension members

From the About the Members Maintenance page or the About the Member Sets Maintenance page, you can create dimension members in both predefined and user-defined dimensions.

A dimension member can be either a sibling or a child of a parent member. A sibling member resides at the same hierarchical level as the previous member in the dimension. A child member resides one level below a parent member in a hierarchy. Member children are displayed, indented, beneath a parent member.

To create a new dimension member

  1. In the Workspace Browser pane, click Dimensions.

  2. In the Dimensions workspace, click to open a dimension.

  3. If you yet to check out the dimension, click Check Out in the Dimensions Tasks pane.

  4. Click the Member Maintenance or the Member Sets Maintenance tab to open the workspace.

  5. On the workspace toolbar, select a member set from the Member set list.

    Note

In the Member Sets Maintenance workspace, use the left pane to create member siblings.

  6. In the list, click to select a member under which you want to add a sibling or a child member.

  7. Click Create New Sibling or Create New Child on the workspace toolbar depending on whether you want to create a sibling or child member. Alternatively, on the Action menu, click New Sibling or click New Child.

A new member is displayed, and you must set default properties for it.

  8. Set the following default member properties by clicking each cell and typing in a value:

    • Name Enter a name for the new dimension member. The name must be from 1 to 256 characters and is meant to be a user-friendly descriptor for an object

    • Label Enter a label for the new dimension member. The label is the primary identifier of objects throughout the system, it cannot exceed 40 characters, and it must be unique.

    • Description The description can be up to 512 characters long.

  9. If the dimension includes member properties in addition to the default properties listed in step 8, set them, if they are editable. For example, some predefined dimensions include dimension-specific properties in addition to the default properties.

  10. (Optional) Use the Move Up or Move Down buttons, and the Indent or Outdent buttons to position the new member in the list.
