Azure Active Directory Connect - Express vs Custom Settings

Updated: June 8, 2015

Applies To: Azure

Microsoft Azure Active Directory Connect is currently in a Public Preview release.

The Azure Active Directory Connect wizard is the single tool and guided experience for connecting your on-premises directories with Azure Active Directory. The wizard deploys and configures all components required to get your directory integration up and running including sync services, password sync or Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS), and prerequisites such as the Azure AD PowerShell module.

Azure Active Directory Connect encompasses functionality that was previously released as DirSync and AAD Sync. These tools will no longer be released individually.

Azure Active Directory Connect is now your one-stop shop for sync, sign-on, and all other aspects of your on-premises to Azure AD integration.

The wizard offers Express or Custom settings.

Express Settings

Deploys directory synchronization with the password sync option for a single forest. This allows sign-on to cloud resources based on Active Directory passwords.

Custom Settings

Optionally you can deploy directory synchronization with AD FS for single sign-on (SSO).

Deploy one or many AD FS and Web Application Proxy servers for a complete, highly available solution.
