IP multicasting is used to provide efficient multicast services to clients that may not be located on the same network segment. For instance, Windows Sockets applications can join a multicast group to participate in a wide-area conference.

Windows Embedded CE is level-2 (send and receive) compliant with RFC 1112.

IGMP is the protocol used to manage IP multicasting.
