Set the data range

The default values on the Legend page of the Data Mapping Wizard are based on an evaluation of the data you're mapping. You can accept these defaults or make custom changes. Whenever you make a change on this page—such as changing the range type or the number of ranges (if available)—MapPoint automatically re-assigns values based on your selection and the data you're mapping.

The procedure for setting data ranges and formatting the legend for data maps depends on the map type.

Shaded Area, Shaded Circle, and Sized Circle maps

  1. In the Legend title box, type the title you want to appear in the legend for this data map.

  2. In the Range type list, click the type of range to display the data on the map.

  3. In the Number of ranges box, select or type the number of ranges into which the data should be divided.

    Notes

You can select between one and eight ranges for the following range types: discrete equal ranges, discrete logarithmic ranges, equal data points, and unique values.

If you selected unique values as a range type and you have more than eight data points, then only the first eight data points will be mapped.

For continuous range and continuous logarithmic ranges, the data ranges are automatically divided into three ranges.

  4. Select High to low or Low to high as the order in which values should be displayed in the map legend.

  5. Click the arrow next to the Color box to select the color range for a Shaded Area or Shaded Circle map or the color for a Sized Circle map.

  6. To change the values mapped within a range, type new ranges in the Data range boxes.

    Notes

The number of Data range boxes depends on the range type and the number of ranges (if available).

If you change any of the data range values, the Range type changes to Custom.

Changing the data ranges may affect the number of values mapped. The Values mapped column shows the number of data points that will be mapped for each range. If the data ranges you've selected don't incorporate all of the data, the top of the column shows the number that will be mapped compared to the total number of values in the data.

  7. In the Range label box for each range, type the label you want to appear in the legend.

Multiple Symbol maps

  1. In the Legend title box, type the title you want to appear in the legend for this data map.

  2. In the Range type list, click the type of range to display the data on the map.

  3. In the Number of ranges box, select or type the number of ranges into which the data should be divided.

    Notes

You can select between one and eight ranges.

  4. Select High to low or Low to high as the order in which values should be displayed in the map legend.

  5. Click the arrow next to the Symbol box for each range and select one of the MapPoint standard symbols or one of your own custom symbols.

  6. To change the values mapped within a range, type new ranges in the Data range boxes.

    Notes

The number of Data range boxes depends on the range type and the number of ranges (if available).

Sized Pie Chart maps

  1. In the Legend title box, type the title you want to appear in the legend for this data map.

  2. In the Range type list, click the type of range to display the data on the map.

  3. In the Number of ranges box, select or type the number of ranges into which the data should be divided.

Column Chart and Series Column Chart maps

  1. In the Legend title box, type the title you want to appear in the legend for this data map.

  2. In the Range type list, click the type of range to display the data on the map.

Note  For continuous range and continuous logarithmic ranges, the data ranges are automatically divided into five ranges.

  3. To change how the values are mapped, type the new top and bottom range in the Data range boxes.

    Notes

If you change any of the data range values, the Range type changes to Custom.

Changing the data ranges may affect the number of values mapped. The Values mapped box shows the number of data points that will be mapped. If the data range values you've selected don't incorporate all of the data, it will show the number of values mapped out of the total number of values in the data.

  4. In the Range label box for each range, type the label you want to appear in the legend.
