Link or embed a map in another document

Note  The same results can be achieved more easily with the MapPoint Office COM add-in. Follow this procedure only if you have removed the add-in. See About the MapPoint Office COM add-in for more information.

  1. Start a Microsoft Office program, open the document you want, and then place the insertion point where you plan to insert the map.
  2. On the Insert menu, click Object, and then do one of the following:
  3. To create and insert a new map as an embedded object in the document, on the Create New tab in the Object dialog box, select Microsoft MapPoint Map in the Object type box, and then click OK.

    An embedded map showing the MapPoint default map view is inserted into your document. Double-click the map and use Find or any other MapPoint tools to manipulate the map.

    To insert an existing map as a linked object, on the Create from File tab of the Object dialog box, type the path and file name of the map you want in the File name box, or click Browse to find the directory that contains your map. Select the map file you want, and click OK.


When you save your document, whether linked or embedded, your map will be saved with it.

When you insert a map into another document as a linked or embedded object, you create a compound document.

In Microsoft Word 2002 and Microsoft Excel 2002, you can also use MapPoint smart tags to quickly embed maps in your document.
