Restoring Log Files Separately

Topic Last Modified: 2006-11-30

Differential and Incremental backups include only the transaction log files, whereas Full and Copy backups include both transaction logs files as well as the database files. Pre-Exchange 2007, Writer supported database-only restores from Full and Copy backups, but restoring logs from these backups was not supported unless the whole backup set was restored including all the database files. Exchange 2007 Writer supports Log component as restorable by itself to enable recovery from older Full/Copy backups to the current point in time. Exchange writer also allows concatenating transaction logs from multiple backups with the associated Full backups in a single restore process to reduce the administrative complexity in handling multiple backup sets during restore.
