Restoring Log Files Separately

Differential and Incremental backups include only the transaction log files, whereas Full and Copy backups include both transaction logs files as well as the database files. In Exchange 2003, the VSS Writer supported database-only restores from Full and Copy backups, but restoring logs from these backups was not supported unless the whole backup set was restored including all the database files. Both Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010 Writers support restoring just the Log component, to enable recovery from older Full/Copy backups to the current point in time. Exchange 2007 and 2010 writers also allows concatenating transaction logs from multiple backups with the associated Full backups in a single restore process to reduce the administrative complexity in handling multiple backup sets during restore.
