Map data starting with the Import or Link Data Wizard

  1. Choose whether to import or link to your source data, and then:

    To obtain data by Do this
    Importing source data

    On the Data menu, click Import Data Wizard.

    - or -

    On the Standard toolbar, click Import Data Wizard  Import Data Wizard button.

    Linking to source data

    On the Data menu, click Link Data Wizard.

    - or -

    On the Standard toolbar, click Link Data Wizard  Link Data Wizard button.

  2. Select the source file that contains the data you want to import or link to and click Open.

  3. Depending on your data source, you may have to choose specific data, or choose a separator character.

    Notes

    You won't need to choose specific data if your data source only contains one set of data (for example, if you have a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet that only contains one worksheet).

    You will only need to choose a separator character if your data source is a plain-text file.

  4. Choose the Country/Region to which your data applies, and specify the data type for each column in your data.

  5. If you are linking to your data, select the column that will be used as the primary key.

  6. Click Finish to exit from the Import or Link Data Wizard and to start the Data Mapping Wizard.

  7. If you had any records that could not be matched to the map, match unmatched records.

  8. On the Map Type page of the Data Mapping Wizard, select the type of map you want to use to display your data.

  9. If you selected a Pushpin Map, on the Pushpins page of the wizard, select the properties for the Pushpin set, and then skip to step 13.

  10. On the Data Fields page of the wizard, select the specific data fields you want to display on the map, how you want that data compared, and by what geographic unit you want to show that data.

  11. Click Next.

  12. Format your legend based on the map type you selected:

    For these map types Do this
    Shaded Area, Shaded Circle, Sized Circle, and Multiple Symbol

    Set the data range.

    Label the data fields and specify the size of the pie.
