Troubleshoot general program or system issues

The program is not running properly.

If you are running Microsoft  MapPoint from a disc (either CD-ROM or DVD) rather than a network and the program is not running properly, you may be having problems with your drive. Check the following:

The disc might need cleaning.

Use a soft, lint-free cloth to wipe the all-silver side of the disc in straight lines outwards from the center of the disc.

Windows might not recognize the drive.

To ensure that Windows recognizes the drive, follow these steps:

  1. With the MapPoint disc in the drive, double-click My Computer on your desktop.
  2. Double-click the drive represented by a picture of the kind of disc you are using.
  3. If you receive a message that the drive is not available, try removing and reinserting the disc.

Note  If you have an external drive, be sure the power is turned on.

The settings for your drive might not be optimal.

To ensure optimal performance when running Windows 98, do the following:

  1. Right-click My Computer.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the Performance tab.
  4. Click File System, and then click the tab for the drive you are using.
  5. Verify that the Supplemental cache size slider is set to Large, and that Optimize access pattern for is correctly set for your computer's drive. See your drive or computer documentation for setting details.

If you still experience problems, consult your computer or drive documentation, or contact the manufacturer.

The drive might conflict with other hardware.

To check for hardware conflicts, refer to Windows Help by doing the following:

  1. On the Windows taskbar, click the Start button, and then click Help.
  2. On the Contents tab, click Troubleshooting and Maintenance, and then follow the instructions applicable to your operating system.

My Microsoft IntelliMouse pointer jumps around the screen.

If you're using a Microsoft IntelliMouse pointing device with snap-to capabilities, its Snap To feature can cause the mouse pointer to jump around on your monitor screen. To correct the problem, turn off the Snap To feature by following these steps:

  1. In Windows, click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Mouse.
  3. On the Pointer Options tab, clear the Automatically move pointer to default button in dialog boxes check box.
  4. Click OK.
