Recipients, Folders, and Groups

This content is no longer actively maintained. It is provided as is, for anyone who may still be using these technologies, with no warranties or claims of accuracy with regard to the most recent product version or service release.

A recipient can be a person (user or contact), a folder, or a group. The following list defines the types of recipients with respect to their objects and mailbox types:

  • Mailbox-enabled recipients have both a mail address and a Microsoft® Exchange mailbox.
  • Mail-enabled recipients have a mail address but do not have an Exchange mailbox. Mail sent to this type of recipient is typically forwarded to another e-mail location outside of Exchange.
  • Mail-enabled folders are folders in which items can be posted.
  • Mail-enabled groups are distribution lists.

The following table defines the characteristics of these mail recipient types.

Recipient type E-mail address Actual location in store
Mailbox-enabled recipient Address can be a store mailbox or be set to a forwarding address. The recipient's mailbox.
Mail-enabled recipient Mail is forwarded to this address. None.
Mail-enabled folder An address to the folder. The public folder.
Mail-enabled group A group address. (Mail is routed to those in the group.) None. The group serves as a distribution list.

When any of these recipient types is disabled, Exchange Server 2003 does not provide access to them by standard e-mail protocols. From an e-mail perspective, the server does not recognize the address unless it is enabled.
