Could not copy temporary files to the output directory

Visual Studio .NET 2003

The project system could not copy temporary files to the output directory. Compilers always build to intermediate directories, for example, obj\configname. At the conclusion of the build process, the project system copies the files from the intermediate directory into the project output directory.

To correct this error

  • Restart Visual Studio.
  • If you are working with a Web project, restart the Web server.
  • The program may be running at the same time you are trying to build it. If this is the case, quit the program and rebuild.
  • If the project references an output from another project as a file reference, and turns off Copy Local property for the reference, this might cause the compiler of the project that references the built file to lock that file. To resolve this situation, set the Copy Local property to true in the Properties window.
