The term Designer HTML describes an important extension to the FrontPage HTML Markup component. In earlier versions of FrontPage, you could insert pieces of HTML into a page, even if FrontPage could not recognize those HTML tags. (For example, some HTML tags were developed after FrontPage shipped or authoring tool-specific tags were used in a pre-processing step before producing output HTML. HTML tags like these appear in FrontPage with an "unknown HTML" icon. )

With Designer HTML, developers get two key pieces of new functionality in FrontPage:

  • The ability to specify an alternate display for a piece of unknown HTML

  • The ability to insert pieces of unknown HTML into FrontPage

This chapter describes extensions to the WEBBOT pseudo-tag that allow for alternate representations of the underlying HTML when it is displayed in FrontPage. Several examples are included to demonstrate this HTML extensibility design.
