Dimension Value Type Field, Dimension Value Table
Specifies the purpose of the dimension value in this field. The dimension value type is based on the same principles as Account Type in the Chart of Accounts and is used to create a hierarchical relationship between the dimension values. This characteristic can be used effectively to analyze commercial activities at different levels of detail. Dimension values are automatically assigned to the Standard dimension value type, but you can change this. Choose the field to select one of the following options:

Total |
Total is used for the program to total a series of dimension values that do not immediately have priority over the total dimension value. Use Total when you need to add up the dimension values of several groups of different dimension values. If you use the Total dimension value type, the Totaling field cannot be blank. |
Begin-Total |
A flag for the start of a series of dimension values that must be totaled, ends with an End-Total dimension value type. The dimension value type Begin-Total can also be posted in the same way as the Standard dimension value type. |
End-Total |
A total for the series of dimension values beginning with the Begin-Total dimension value. The total is defined in the Totaling field. |
Total and end total are used together to group dimension values, and also to create hierarchical relationships for groups within groups. In this example, you can see that a user has used the Dimension Value Type field to create a Northern European dimension value group within the European dimension value group:

This means that a posting of the Northern Europe (EU) dimension value is an independent value, as well as a component of the total values of Europe and Northern Europe.
When you choose the Actions tab and then choose Indent Dimension Values, the dimension values between Begin-Total and End-Total are automatically indented by one space. At the same time, the Totaling field of the dimension value of End-Greater type is filled in using the dimension values of the group. In the example above, sales from countries/regions in the European Union and from those outside it would be totaled and the result displayed in the Northern Europe balance field, Total dimension field.
You can set the Indent function to fill in the Totaling field of the End-Total dimension values instead of entering the figures manually.
