Key features of Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry

2/25/2014

The following topics describe some of the key features of Windows Embedded 8.1 Industry (Industry 8.1) and how to use them:

  • Assigned access
Restrict a user account to access a single application. You can use assigned access to set up single-function devices, such as restaurant menus or displays at trade shows.
  • Custom Logon
Suppress Windows 8.1 UI elements that relate to the Welcome screen and shutdown screen. For example, you can suppress all elements of the Welcome screen UI and provide a Custom Logon UI. You can also suppress the Blocked Shutdown Resolver (BSDR) screen and automatically end applications while the OS waits for applications to close before a shutdown.
  • Dialog Filter
Control which dialog boxes and windows are displayed on the screen, and automatically handle dialog boxes by taking a default action, such as to close or show the dialog box.
  • Embedded Lockdown Manager
Configure some lockdown features on a device running Industry 8.1 with this snap-in to the Microsoft Management Console (MMC).
  • Gesture Filter
Disable the edge and corner gestures available in Industry 8.1. Gesture Filter enables you to block edge gestures (left, right, top extended swipe, and each corner) individually.
  • Keyboard Filter
Suppress undesirable key presses or key combinations. Normally, a customer can use certain Windows key combinations like Ctrl+Alt+Delete or Ctrl+Shift+Tab to alter the operation of a device by locking the screen or using Task Manager to close a running application. This may not be desirable if your device is intended for a dedicated purpose.
  • Shell Launcher
Replace the default Windows 8.1 shell with a custom shell. You can use any application or executable as your custom shell, such as a command window or a custom dedicated application.
  • Unbranded Boot
Suppress Windows 8.1 elements that appear when Industry 8.1 starts or resumes and can suppress the crash screen if Industry 8.1 encounters an error that it cannot recover from.
  • Unified Write Filter
Intercept all write attempts to a protected volume and redirect those write attempts to a virtual overlay. This improves the reliability and stability of your device and reduces the wear on write-sensitive media, such as flash memory media like solid-state drives.
  • USB Filter
Allow only trusted USB devices to connect to a system. USB Filter intercepts device connect requests and only allows USB devices with matching device product ID, device vendor ID, or device class ID set by administrator to be active and detectable.
  • Windows 8 Application Launcher
Start a Windows Store app immediately after a user signs in to an Industry 8.1 device and to restart the app when the app exits. You can configure Windows 8 Application Launcher to launch different apps for different users.
