Customize toolbars

You can rearrange and modify toolbar buttons, menus, and menu commands by using the mouse or you can use the Rearrange Commands dialog box which is accessible using a keyboard menu. For more information, see Rearrange commands.

Note

To make a change to a toolbar, first make sure the toolbar is visible.

To add or remove a button, menu, or command to or from a toolbar

  • Click the down arrow at the right side of any toolbar, point to Add or Remove Buttons, point to the toolbar name, and then click the item you want to add or remove.

To rename or delete a toolbar

  1. Do one of the following:

    • On the Tools menu, click Customize.

    • Right-click anywhere on any toolbar, and then click Customize.

  2. In the Customize dialog box, on the Toolbars tab, select the custom toolbar.

  3. Do one of the following:

    • To rename the toolbar, click Rename, type a new name in the Toolbar name box, and then press ENTER.

    • To delete the toolbar, click Delete.

    Important

    You can't rename or delete a built-in toolbar.

  1. Do one of the following:

    • On the Tools menu, click Customize.

    • Right-click anywhere on any toolbar, and then click Customize.

  2. To add a separator bar, keep the Customize dialog box open, right-click the button you want on the toolbar, and then click Begin a Group. A separator bar is added to the left of the button on a horizontal toolbar, and above a button on a vertical docked toolbar.

    Note

    To remove a separator bar between two buttons, drag one button closer to the other.

To rename a button or menu command

  1. Do one of the following:

    • On the Tools menu, click Customize.

    • Right-click anywhere on any toolbar, and then click Customize.

  2. In the Customize dialog box, on the Commands tab, in the Categories box, select the category that contains the button or command.

  3. In the Commands box, select the button or command, and then click Modify Selection.

  4. In the Modify Selection dialog box, type a name in the Name box, and then press ENTER.

    Note

    If the toolbar button doesn't display text, you won't see the name change except when you view the ScreenTip by resting your pointer on the button.

To increase the size of toolbar buttons

  1. Do one of the following:

    • On the Tools menu, click Customize.

    • Right-click anywhere on any toolbar, and then click Customize.

  2. In the Customize dialog box, on the Options tab, select the Large icons check box.

To change the width of a drop-down list box on a toolbar

  1. Do one of the following:

    • On the Tools menu, click Customize.

    • Right-click anywhere on any toolbar, and then click Customize.

  2. While the Customize dialog box is open, click the list box you want to change for example, the FontCc295513.274c57e9-7fe2-476d-bf6e-e42c136e7e01(en-us,Expression.10).gif or Font SizeCc295513.4c466c8b-c74a-479a-8af1-8057669bfe0e(en-us,Expression.10).gif box on the Formatting toolbar.

  3. Point to the left or right edge of the box. When the pointer changes to a double-headed arrow, drag the edge of the box to change its width.

To show or hide toolbar ScreenTips

  1. Do one of the following:

    • On the Tools menu, click Customize.

    • Right-click anywhere on any toolbar, and then click Customize.

  2. In the Customize dialog box, on the Options tab, and then select or clear the Show ScreenTips on toolbars check box.

To show or hide shortcut keys in ScreenTips

  1. Do one of the following:

    • On the Tools menu, click Customize.

    • Right-click anywhere on any toolbar, and then click Customize.

  2. In the Customize dialog box, on the Options tab, under Other, select or clear the Show shortcut keys in ScreenTips check box.

To display an icon and text, or text only, on a menu command

  1. If the menu command you want to change is on a toolbar, make sure that the toolbar you want to change is visible.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • On the Tools menu, click Customize.

    • Right-click anywhere on any toolbar, and then click Customize.

  3. With the Customize dialog box open, click the menu that contains the command you want to change.

  4. Click the command you want to change.

  5. In the Customize dialog box, click Modify Selection, and then click the option you want on the shortcut menu.

    Note

    Some commands don't have icons associated with them and can only be displayed as text.

To display text, an icon, or both on a toolbar button

  1. Make sure the toolbar you want to change is visible.

  2. Do one of the following:

    • On the Tools menu, click Customize.

    • Right-click anywhere on any toolbar, and then click Customize.

  3. In the Customize dialog box, on the Commands tab, with the Customize dialog box open, click the button you want to change.

  4. In the Customize dialog box, click Modify Selection, and then click the option you want on the shortcut menu.

    Note

    You can't change the text or icon on a button that displays a list or menu when clicked.
