Get In the IIS Express Lanes with Visual Studio 2010 SP 1
Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1
Service Pack. The name doesn't usually generate a lot of excitement for most folks. Not surprising, since most service packs are mostly rollups of bug fixes and enhancements, based on customer feedback and instrumentation. And that's a good thing. Sometimes boring is fine.
But there is one exciting thing in Visual Studio 2010 Service Pack 1 that I think is worth getting excited about, and that is the integration of IIS Express into Visual Studio 2010. For those of you who haven't heard of it, IIS Express was introduced with the new Microsoft WebMatrix, and it provides the benefits of the local web server built into Visual Studio since VS 2005 (no admin permissions needed, no need to install IIS and run as a service, etc.) while providing the full feature set of IIS 7.x.
Prior to IIS Express, if you wanted to test your web application with SSL, HTTP Compression, URL rewriting rules, or a host of other features, you had no choice but to set up an IIS server, since the built-in Visual Studio web server did not support these features.
Once you've installed Service Pack 1, you can take advantage of IIS Express from within Visual Studio 2010. Simply right-click a web project in Solution Explorer and select "Use IIS Express..." and you're done. Now, when you debug your application, IIS Express will be started for you automatically, and the full feature set will be available to you.
