The path '<path>' is used in the registration of file '<filename>', but no file with this path exists in the project

The referenced COM component is attempting to add a hard-coded path to the registry for a file that is not in the deployment project. Windows Installer cannot resolve the path; if the file does not already exist on a target computer, the installed application could fail.

The Register property for the referenced file is set to vsdrpCOM, which causes Windows Installer to manage the COM registration. Setting Register to vsdrpCOMSelfReg allows a COM .dll to register itself on a target computer outside of the Windows Installer process.

To correct this error

  1. Double-click the error in the Task List to go to the file in the File System Editor.

  2. In the Properties window, select the Register property, and choose vsdrpCOMSelfReg.

    NoteNote

It is still possible that the file will not exist on the target computer, possibly causing the application to fail. It is best not to use hard–coded paths in a COM component.
