Open or Save a File Attached to a Work Item

To view information that has been attached to a work item, and stored in the Team Foundation database, you can open the attached file. You can also save a local copy. You can open or save file attachments using the following Team Foundation clients: Team Web Access, Team Explorer, Office Excel, and Office Project.

Note

If you are working offline in Office Excel or Office Project, you will not be able to open or save file attachments.

Required Permissions

To perform these procedures, you must be a member of the Readers group or have your View work items in this node permission set to Allow. For more information, see Team Foundation Server Permissions.

To open or save a file attached to a work item

  1. Open or select the work item.

    • In Team Web Access or Team Explorer, open the work item form for editing and click the tab for managing links.

      Note

      The name of the tab might be Links, Other links, or Implementation. The name of the tab is determined by the work item definition.

    • From Office Excel or Office Project, select the work item row, and then on the Team tab, in the Work Items group click Links and Attachments.

  2. Click the File Attachments or Attachments tab.

  3. To open an attachment, follow these steps;

    1. Click the attachment that you want to open.

    2. Click Open Attachment.

  4. To save an attached file that you opened, use the application that opened the file.

    For example, if you open a text file that uses Notepad, from the File menu of Notepad, click Save.

  5. To save an attached file without opening it, follow these steps:

    1. Right-click the attachment that you want to save, and click Save As Local Copy or Save Target As.

    2. Browse to the folder where you want to store the file.

    3. Type a file name in the File name box.

    4. Click Save.
