Prerequisites for Creating a Component Definition File

For every component that you want to include in the component definition file, you must identify the following:

  • Component application files and their registry entries
  • Required support files
  • Dependencies or conflicts with other components or capabilities

After determining where you want to list the capabilities and components in the Target Designer All Nodes pane, you can create a new component definition file.

Tip

  • You can use your development system to determine the relevant files and registry entries for a component by using the following process:
    1. Make screen shots of your development system registry and files.
    2. Install the component on your development system, and then make another set of screen shots.
    3. Compare the two sets of screen shots for changes, and then use the information to write your component definition file.
  • For information on how to install your component, see MSDN Library on CD or this Microsoft Web site.
