Microsoft Project Integration

You can manage your Team Foundation Server projects by integrating the work item tracking and project structure features of Team Foundation Server with the project management features of Microsoft Project.

Integrating Microsoft Project with Team Foundation Servers

You can change the project structure of your Team Foundation Server team project from Microsoft Project. As the needs of the project change, you can change the project structure or iterations to meet the steps in the product life cycle. For example, you can define the number of areas a team project has and the hierarchical relationship between them or you can also change the number of iterations a team project goes through and change the steps and work items that make up each iteration.

The following diagram illustrates the interaction between a Visual Studio Team System client computer that has Microsoft Project installed and Team Foundation Server.

Communication between the client and the server occurs through Web services and uses SOAP over HTTP.

Limitations

In default configurations, communication between client computers and Team Foundation servers that includes Microsoft Project communication is sent in unencrypted network traffic.

Security

For users to successfully change the project structure or project iterations, the user account must have appropriate permissions that include the Edit project-level information permission. For more information about permissions, see Team Foundation Server Permissions.
