Installing POSReady Optional Components

Many optional components are available on your Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 installation media. They are listed and described here.

Component Description

Accessibility Tools

Includes adjustments to improve accessibility for blind, hard-of-hearing, or mobility-impaired users.

Additional Drivers

Includes supplemental drivers for peripherals and other devices.

Calculator

Enables you to perform calculations

Character Map

Enables you to copy and paste special characters into your documents, such as mathematical or language-specific characters

Clipboard Viewer

Enables you to view the information that is copied to the Clipboard

Command-Line Utilities

Includes many command-line tools for performing system tasks at the command prompt. See the list of command-line tools later in this section.

Disk Management

Includes utilities to manage disk volumes, partitions, and file systems

Fax Services

Enables you to send, receive, and monitor faxes

HyperTerminal

Enables you to connect to other computers and online services

Indexing Service

Enables you to perform quick full-text searches of indexed documents

Internet Information Services (IIS)

Includes support for hosting Web sites, FTP sites, transactions, Active Server Pages, and database connections

Management and Monitoring Tools

Includes tools for monitoring and improving network performance

Message Queuing

Includes support for guaranteed message delivery, efficient routing, security, transactions

.NET Framework 2.0

Includes support for applications that require the .NET Framework 2.0 or earlier

Networking Services

Includes many network-related services and protocols

Notepad

Enables you create simple documents or Web pages

Paint

Enables you to create, modify, or view images

POS for .NET 1.12

Includes point of service peripheral support for .NET Framework applications

Terminal Services

Includes support for remote computer access

Touch Screen Keyboard

Enables you to use an on-screen keyboard to input information on computers that have touch screens. This component requires the .NET Framework 2.0 or later versions to be installed.

Update Root Certificates

Includes automatic updates for root certificates that provide authentication for secure e-mail, Web browsing, and software deployment

Windows Backup Utility

Enables you to perform backups of your important computer data

Windows Media Format 11

Includes support for Advanced Systems Format (ASF), Windows Media Audio/Video codecs, basic network streaming, and DRM

Windows Media Player 11

Enables you to play digital media such as music, videos, CDs, DVDs and Internet Radio

WordPad

Enables you to create or edit text files that contain formatting or graphics

Installing Optional Components During Installation

You can select your desired optional components by using the Setup Wizard during interactive installation. The POSReady Setup Wizard provides three installation types: Typical, Minimum, and Custom.

  • Typical installation includes the .NET Framework 2.0, POS for .NET 1.12, and Notepad
  • Minimum installation includes no optional components
  • Custom installation enables you to choose your desired optional components

How to install optional components during interactive installation

  1. On the Installation Type page of the Setup Wizard, select Custom. The Optional Components page is displayed.

  2. Select your desired optional components from the list.

Note

Some items depend on other components. If you select a component that has dependencies, the other required components will automatically be selected.

Specifying Optional Components for Unattended Installation

You can specify your desired optional components in an answer file for unattended installation. Optional components are defined in the <Components> sub-element of <SystemData>. For more information, see Answer File Reference.

For example, to install Internet Information Services (IIS), use the following:

You can also use the /guionly switch to start an interactive installation and create an answer file that lists your selected optional components. For more information, see POSReady Setup and the Command Line.

Installing Optional Components in POSReady

There are two ways to install optional components within POSReady:

  • By choosing Add/Remove Windows Components from Control Panel
  • By inserting your POSReady installation media and using the POSReady Companion Setup

How to install optional components from Control Panel

  1. Insert your POSReady installation media.

  2. On the taskbar, choose Start, and then choose Control Panel. Control Panel is displayed.

  3. In Control Panel, choose Add or Remove Programs. The Add or Remove Programs dialog box is displayed.

  4. Choose Add/Remove Windows Components from the left menu. The Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 Components Wizard is displayed.

  5. Choose your desired components from the list and choose Next to install them.

How to install optional components by using your POSReady installation media

  1. Insert your POSReady installation media.

  2. On the taskbar, choose Start, and then choose My Computer. The My Computer window is displayed.

  3. Browse to the Windows Embedded POSReady 2009 installation media and choose the AutoRun application. POSReady Companion Setup is displayed.

  4. Choose Companion Applications, choose your desired components from the list, and then choose Install.

Note
