Deploying a Run-Time Image Using the SDI Data Extraction Tool (Windows Embedded Standard 2009)

The SDI data extraction tool, Sdi2hd.exe, extracts the data from an SDI file and writes it to a specified target disk, or it returns information about the data in an SDI file.

To prepare the run-image for deployment

  1. Build a run-time image using Target Designer.

    Record the size of the run-time image.

  2. Use the SDI Loader to create a virtual disk.

    While creating the virtual disk, make the disk size at least as large as your run-time image, preferably larger, so it can hold the entire image. For more information, see Using the SDI Loader.

  3. Start Disk Management. In Control Panel, open Administrative Tools, and then open Computer Management. Then, perform the following steps to initialize and format the disk, and make the disk active:

    1. Right-click the virtual disk, and then choose Initialize Disk.
      Do not convert to a dynamic disk; leave the disk formatted as a basic disk.
    2. Right-click the disk image, and then choose New Partition.
    3. Use the default values, and then choose Finish to complete the partition setup process.
    4. Right-click the disk image again, and then choose Mark Partition as Active.
  4. Copy the run-time image to the newly created virtual disk, the SDI folder.

  5. Use SDI Loader to remove the SDI disk.

    Now the SDI file that contains the run-time image is ready to be used and deployed with the SDI2HD tool.

  6. Copy the SDI file and SDI2HD tool onto a CD and use it to boot a system that needs to be imaged.

  7. Using SDI2HD, you can extract the SDI file on the CD to the hard disk on the run-time system.
