Installing the Component Database Update

Before installing the component database that the Component Designer and Target Designer tools access, you need to have either MSDE, Microsoft SQL Server 2000, or Microsoft SQL Server 2005 installed.

Note   When installing Windows XP Embedded on a computer running Windows Vista, use Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition or Microsoft SQL Server 2005 as the database. Download Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition from https://msdn.microsoft.com/sql/express/ or obtain a licensed copy of Microsoft SQL Server 2005.Do not install MSDE on Windows Vista systems.

Install the appropriate database engine type for the tools type you will be using.

You cannot upgrade from an evaluation component database to a full version. You must first remove the evaluation component database, and then install the full version.

You can install the component database on the same computer that you installed your development tools on (for single-user environment) or on another computer (for team environment). For more information about single and team environments, see Installation Options.

Note   There are two types of Windows XP Embedded: full and evaluation. You cannot use evaluation tools to connect to a full version of the component database. The types of the tools and of the component database must match.
