Dos Windows on Windows Support
The Dos Windows on Windows Support component provides the core architecture that is required to run 16-bit applications on Microsoft Windows NT. Without it, applications that have 16-bit components would not install or run correctly.
This component includes the Ntvdm.exe application, which handles emulation for 16-bit MS-DOS applications.
This component also includes other dynamic-link libraries and system files, which are used by Ntvdm.exe to emulate necessary 16-bit system functions and interact with 32-bit system core components. The Wow32.dll file provides 16-bit Windows application programming interface (API) functions.
Ntvdm.dll and Vdmdbg.dll provide some debug services for 16-bit applications. Vdmredir.dll provides networking services. Other 16-bit binary files that are included are used by applications designed for MS-DOS, Windows 3.x, or Windows 9.x.
