Component Database Manager Modes

You can open Component Database Manager in either of two modes, Read import mode or Exclusive mode.

Component Database Manager always opens in Read import mode if any of the following conditions are true:

  • Another user is using the database in Exclusive mode.
  • You already have Component Designer or Target Designer open.
  • You do not have permission from the database administrator to modify the component database.

Component Database Manager opens in Exclusive mode only when you open it from a program icon and none of the conditions listed for Read import mode exist.

The following list describes the modes and what they allow you to do:

  • Read import mode: When you open Component Database Manager from the Component Designer or Target Designer Tools menu, the window is titled Microsoft Component Database Manager. In this mode you can import component definition (.sld) files into the database, and view, but not delete or modify, the platforms, packages, components, repositories, groups, and repository sets available in the database.
  • Exclusive mode: When you open Component Database Manager directly from a program icon, such as from the Windows Start menu, the window is titled Microsoft Component Database Manager (Exclusive Mode). In this mode you can import .sld files, and view, modify, or delete platforms, packages, components, repositories, groups, and repository sets in the database.
