.NET Framework 是 Microsoft 用來在 Windows 用戶端、伺服器及行動或內嵌裝置中建置應用程式的 Managed 程式碼程式設計模型。開發人員會使用 .NET 建置許多類型的應用程式：Web 應用程式、伺服器應用程式、智慧型用戶端應用程式、主控台應用程式、資料庫應用程式等等。

為了提供豐富的支援，.NET Framework 包含種類眾多的支援類別庫，包括：Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) 在 Windows 用戶端為使用者提供驚人的視覺體驗；Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) 讓您能夠在整個企業的應用程式間迅速且有彈性地進行通訊；Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) 可讓開發人員將工作流程建置到任何應用程式；ASP.NET 提供高效能、互動式的 Web 應用程式；程式庫可處理 XML、資料、IO、加密、文字轉換語音 (Text-to-Speech) 等等。
