Sending Messages to a Storage Services Queue

Updated: February 5, 2014

If your cloud service uses storage services queues, you can interact with that service by sending messages directly to one of those queues instead of writing or running any code. For example, your cloud service might use messages to request computational work from a worker role. If you know the format of those messages, you can test that role by sending a message to the queue interactively from Visual Studio.

You can send any message to a storage services queue, but the message won't be meaningful unless your cloud service is programmed to receive and parse the messages that you send. For more information, see How to: Use the Queue Storage Service.

Storage services queues are hosted in a storage account and are distinct from service bus queues. For more information about service bus queues, see Service Bus Queues.

To send a message to a storage services queue

  1. Open Server Explorer, and then expand the Windows Azure Storage node.

  2. Expand the node for the storage account that contains the queue to which you want to send a message.

  3. Double-click on the queue name to open the window for that queue.

  4. On the toolbar, choose the Add Message button.

  5. In the Add Message dialog box, enter the message text in UTF-8 format.

The message must contain no more than 64KB if you're sending it to a queue that was created with the current release of the Windows Azure SDK. The message must contain no more than 8KB if you're sending it to a queue that was created with a release from August 2011 or earlier.

  6. Enter an expiration time of no longer than seven days.

  7. Choose the OK button.
