zero extension

A type-conversion operation that increases the number of bits that are used to represent an unsigned integer value. This conversion operation fills all the bit positions to the left of the original value with zeros. For example, a zero-extension operation that converts the unsigned char value 0xc3 to a 16-bit unsigned int produces the result 0x00c3.
