Updated: April 24, 2014

This topic is OBSOLETE. You can find the most current version in the SQL 14 Transact-SQL Reference.

Microsoft Microsoft Azure SQL Database supports Transact-SQL grammar that you can use to query a database and to insert, update, and delete data in tables in a database. The topics in this section describe the Transact-SQL grammar support provided by Microsoft Azure SQL Database.

ImportantImportant
The Transact-SQL Reference for Microsoft Azure SQL Database is a subset of Transact-SQL for SQL Server.

In this Section

This section provides a series of foundational topics for understanding and using the Transact-SQL grammar with Microsoft Azure SQL Database. To view details about data types, functions, operators, statements, and more, you can browse through the table of contents in these sections or search for topics in the index.

Topic Description

Syntax Conventions (Azure SQL Database)

Describes the conventions that are used in the syntax diagrams in the Transact-SQL statements.

Data Types (Azure SQL Database)

Describes both supported and unsupported system data types in Microsoft Azure SQL Database.

Functions (Azure SQL Database)

Describes both supported and unsupported built-in functions in Microsoft Azure SQL Database.

Operators (Azure SQL Database)

Describes both supported and unsupported operators in Microsoft Azure SQL Database.

System Stored Procedures (Azure SQL Database)

Describes both supported and unsupported system stored procedures in Microsoft Azure SQL Database.

System Tables (Azure SQL Database)

Describes the support for the system tables.

System Views (Azure SQL Database)

Describes both supported and unsupported system views in Microsoft Azure SQL Database.

Supported Transact-SQL Statements (Azure SQL Database)

Partially Supported Transact-SQL Statements (Azure SQL Database)

Describes a set of modified Transact-SQL statements that can be used with Microsoft Azure SQL Database.

Unsupported Transact-SQL Statements (Azure SQL Database)

Describes the unsupported Transact-SQL statements in Microsoft Azure SQL Database.

Federation Statements (Azure SQL Database)

Describes Transact-SQL statements that are specific to federations in Microsoft Azure SQL Database.

ImportantImportant
The current implementation of Federations will be retired with Web and Business service tiers. Consider deploying custom sharding solutions to maximize scalability, flexibility, and performance. For more information about custom sharding, see Scaling Out Azure SQL Databases.
