Register Servers with Azure Backup

Applies To: Windows Server 2008 R2 with SP1, Windows Server 2012

Registering a server with Microsoft Azure Backup links the server with a specific backup vault, and it associates the server with your subscription. Each server that you want to back up items from must be registered with a backup vault before any backups can occur.

This topic includes sample Windows PowerShell cmdlets that you can use to automate some of the procedures described. For more information, see Using Cmdlets.

Before you attempt to register a server, you should verify that the Azure Backup Agent was correctly installed and that you have a certificate that can be used to register the server with the vault.

To verify the installation of the Azure Backup Agent, do one of the following:

  • Press Windows logo key + Q to open the Apps menu, and then click Azure Backup Agent. The Azure Backup Agent snap-in should open.

  • Open Server Manager and select Computer Management from the Tools menu. Expand Storage, and then expand Windows Server Backup. Online Backup should be listed in addition to Local Backup.

About the vault certificate

To successfully register a server you must have an X.509 v3 certificate to register your servers with Recovery Services vaults. The certificate must have a key length of at least 2048 bits and should reside in the Personal certificate store of your Local Computer. When the certificate is installed on your server, it should contain the private key of the certificate. To upload to the certificate to the Azure Management Portal, you must export the public key as a .cer format file. For more information see, Upload a public certificate.

Initial configuration of the Azure Backup Agent takes place by registering a server with the online portal by using the Azure Backup Agent snap-in or Windows PowerShell cmdlets for Microsoft Azure Backup. To register a server for use with Microsoft Azure Backup, you must have completed the process described in Install Azure Backup Agent and upload the certificate. Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure.

Do this step using Windows PowerShell

  1. Press the Windows logo key + Q to open the Apps menu, and then click Azure Backup Agent. The Azure Backup Agent snap-in should open.

  2. In the Action menu, click Register Server to open the Register Server Wizard.

  3. The Certificates page is displayed. Select the certificate that you are going to use with Microsoft Azure Backup. Click Next to continue.

  4. The Proxy Configuration page is displayed. If you want Azure Backup Agent to use a unique proxy server to connect to the Internet, click Use a proxy server for Azure Backup, and then type the URL to the proxy server. Use the fully qualified domain name or the IP address of the proxy server (for example, http://proxy.corp.contoso.com or and the port number on the server that is configured for Internet connections.

    If the proxy server requires authentication before allowing connections, click This proxy server requires authentication, and then type the user name and password that Azure Backup Agent should submit when it is queried for credentials. Click Next to continue.

    If no proxy server is specified, Azure Backup Agent will use the default proxy configuration for the server as displayed in the LAN Settings. (To see the LAN Settings, click Internet Properties, and then click Connections.)

  5. Click Register to begin the server registration process. If successful, a registration confirmation message is displayed and you can close the wizard.

PowerShell Logo Windows PowerShell equivalent commands

The following Windows PowerShell cmdlet or cmdlets perform the same function as the preceding procedure. Enter each cmdlet on a single line, even though they may appear word-wrapped across several lines here because of formatting constraints. Placeholder text in these samples is denoted by the use of angle brackets. You should replace that entire item, including the brackets, with the appropriate information.

The following code sample illustrates how you can use Windows PowerShell to register a server with Microsoft Azure Backup after establishing variables to use to supply your credentials. If credentials are not specified, the registration cmdlet will prompt for the user ID account credentials before registration, but it will not prompt for the additional server properties that are configured by using the Register Server Wizard. You can copy and paste the sample code into your Windows PowerShell script.

When the server is registered, you need to use the Set-OBMachineSetting cmdlet to specify the server properties. The following examples show how the various settings can be specified:

Configure proxy settings

$spwd = ConvertTo-SecureString -String <password> -AsplainText –Force
Set-OBMachineSetting -ProxyServer proxycontoso.com -ProxyPort <your proxy port> -ProxyUsername domain\username -ProxyPassword $spwd

If the server should stop by using a unique proxy server configuration:

Set-OBMachineSetting –NoProxy

Configure bandwidth throttling settings

$mon = [System.DayOfWeek]::Monday
$tue = [System.DayOfWeek]::Tuesday
Set-OBMachineSetting -WorkDay "Mo", "Tu" -StartWorkHour "9:00:00" -EndWorkHour "18:00:00" -WorkHourBandwidth (512*1024) -NonWorkHourBandwidth (2048*1024)

If a server should stop by using bandwidth throttling settings:

Set-OBMachineSetting –NoThrottle
