Il download di .NET Framework 4 Server Core è supportato su Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 Server Core o successivo; non è supportato sulle versioni precedenti di Server Core. Funzionano solo le funzionalità basate sul server. Le funzionalità dell'applicazione client (quali Windows Presentation Foundation e la distribuzione ClickOnce) non sono supportate.
