A Self-Study Guide to Migrating Access Applications to Windows Azure
About this Guide
This guide is written as a technical resource for developers or business users who are considering migrating their business applications from Microsoft Access 2010 to SQL Azure for the first time. The process of converting Access applications to run on SQL Server or SQL Database in Azure is also frequently referred to as upsizing.
In this paper, we provide the following information:
An overview of Windows Azure SQL Databases, and the advantages of migration to cloud database storage.
Description of the three methods for migrating from Access to Windows Azure.
Details on how to prepare for migration.
Walkthrough of how to migrate tables and queries, as a first step.
Scope of this Guide
We verified these procedures in the following environment, current as of November 1, 2012:
Windows 7 (English)
Office 2010 Professional (English)
SQL Server 2012 Enterprise (English)
SQL Azure Database
Because this document provides technical instructions for developers who have been using Access 2010 (or earlier versions), basic knowledge of Access is recommended. Windows Azure SQL Database is subject to frequent updates and changes in functionality, so you might need to make changes in the procedures described here, to make them run as expected.
