Create a Linked Work Item (Team Explorer Everywhere)

You might want to create a work item that is automatically linked to an existing work item. For example, you might do this if you have several related work items. You can do this from the results list of a work item query or from the links tab of an open work item.

To create a work item that is linked to an existing one

  1. In Team Explorer, perform one of the following actions:

    • In the results of a work item query, right-click the work item to which you want to link a new work item, and then click New Linked Work Item.

    • Open the work item to which you want to link a new work item, click the tab for managing links, and then click New.

      Note

The name of the tab might be Links, All links, or Implementation. The name of the tab is determined by the work item definition.

The Add New Linked Work Item dialog box appears.

  2. In the Link Type list, click the type of link that you want to create.

For example, to make the new work item a child of the current work item, click Child. For more information about types of links, see Choose Link Types to Effectively Track Your Project (Team Explorer Everywhere).

  3. In the Work Item Type list, click the type of work item that you want to create.

  4. Type a Title and a Comment, as appropriate, and then click OK.

A new work item form appears.

  5. Complete the work item by specifying information in the fields as appropriate.

  6. On the File menu, click Save or press Ctrl+S.

The new work item is saved to Team Foundation, and each work item contains a link to the other.
