    Known Issues and Workarounds

    Running with administrator permissions is recommended

    Some features of Visual Studio will run only with administrator permissions. For this reason we recommend that when using Visual Studio 2005, you do the following:

    • Run Visual Studio with elevated administrator permissions
    • Be a member of the "Administrators" group on the local machine
    • Right-click the Visual Studio icon and select the "Run as administrator" option from the context menu

    For more information, see:

    Just In Time (JIT) Script Debugging is broken

    Errors in script running under Microsoft Internet Explorer will not cause a JIT Dialog to be displayed due to an elevation policy restriction.

    To resolve this issue:

    • Add this registry key, replacing “C:\\WINDOWS” with the name of the Windows folder on the target computer:[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Low Rights\ElevationPolicy\{E62A7A31-6025-408E-87F6-81AEB0DC9347}]
      "AppName"="vsjitdebugger.exe"
      "AppPath"="C:\\WINDOWS\\system32\\"
      "Policy"=dword:00000003

    Connection to SourceSafe Internet Service may fail with Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1

    After installing Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 on a machine running Windows Vista, you may encounter the following error when connecting to a SourceSafe database over HTTPS:

    “Cannot contact the Visual SourceSafe Internet Web Service or cannot access the specified database.

    The server returned the following error: Unspecified error (0x80004005)

    The plug-in advanced settings for SourceSafe Internet require SSL connections.  Please, verify that your server can be accessed using secure connections or change your plug-in advanced settings.”

    This error occurs when using SourceSafe integration with the Internet plug-in.

    To resolve this issue, do one of the following:

    • If you have VSS Administrator open, restart it.
    • Restart Visual Studio.

    Visual Studio 2005 project templates disappear when upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista

    If you install Visual Studio 2005 on a non-English version of Windows XP and then upgrade to Windows Vista you may not see any templates when you try to create a new project for Visual Basic, C# or J# using the File | New Project dialog.

    To resolve this issue, do one of the following after the operating system upgrade:

    • For Visual Basic Express, run vbexpress.exe /installvstemplates.
    • For Visual CSharp Express, run vcsexpress.exe /installvstemplates.
    • For Visual JSharp Express, run jsexpress.exe /installvstemplates.
    • All other Visual Studio versions, run devenv.exe /installvstemplates.
