Installation on Vista requires elevated privileges
If you are installing this service pack upgrade on Vista, we recommend that you right click on the service pack upgrade executable and select "Run As…” Alternatively, you can launch the executable from a privileged console window.
Running with administrator permissions is recommended
Some features of Visual Studio will run only with administrator permissions. For this reason we recommend that when using Visual Studio 2005, you do the following:

Just In Time (JIT) Script Debugging is broken
Errors in script running under Microsoft Internet Explorer will not cause a JIT Dialog to be displayed due to an elevation policy restriction.

Connection to SourceSafe Internet Service may fail with Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1
After installing Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 on a machine running Windows Vista, you may encounter the following error when connecting to a SourceSafe database over HTTPS:
“Cannot contact the Visual SourceSafe Internet Web Service or cannot access the specified database. The server returned the following error: Unspecified error (0x80004005) The plug-in advanced settings for SourceSafe Internet require SSL connections. Please, verify that your server can be accessed using secure connections or change your plug-in advanced settings.” |
This error occurs when using SourceSafe integration with the Internet plug-in.
To resolve this issue, do one of the following:
Visual Studio 2005 project templates disappear when upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista
If you install Visual Studio 2005 on a non-English version of Windows XP and then upgrade to Windows Vista you may not see any templates when you try to create a new project for Visual Basic, C# or J# using the File | New Project dialog.
To resolve this issue, do one of the following after the operating system upgrade:
SQL Server Compact Edition Tools and Runtime
Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 includes updates of the SQL Server Compact Edition 3.1 design time utilities. The SQL Server Compact Edition Tools for Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 include UI/Dialogs, device CAB files, DataDirectory feature, and ClickOnce support for the Smart Device Development components. You must download and install the following tools and runtime to support end-to-end SQL Server-based data development on Vista:
Microsoft Device Emulator Version 2.0
The Microsoft Device Emulator Version 1.0 that shipped with Visual Studio 2005 cannot be cradled in Vista. This issue has been fixed in the latest Device Emulator Version 2.0, which is due to release in Winter 2007. You will need the 64-bit version of the installer in order to install the Device Emulator on 64-bit platforms.
