Notes:

  • DVD update shipments include a subset of the new products that are published to MSDN Subscriber Downloads. New product releases, service packs, and SDKs and DDKs are included, but not patches or “slipstream” builds (product + service pack in an integrated installation).
  • No products are made available exclusively on DVD. MSDN Subscriber Downloads contains the entire library of products that are eligible for development and testing use by subscribers.
  • Due to DVD production lead times, new products are typically available on MSDN Subscriber Downloads 3-6 months before they appear in a DVD update shipment.
  • Different language versions of a given product are typically released at different times, so non-English versions often will be in a later DVD update shipment than the English version. Many products are only created in a limited number of languages.
  • The set of product languages shipped depends on the subscriber’s Language Pack which is typically selected at the time of purchasing the subscription. Different Language Packs are available depending on the country of the subscriber.
  • Shipments are made quarterly, containing new products released since the previous shipment. Quarterly shipment timing is adjusted to include key new products rather than following a fixed schedule.
  • Not all MSDN subscribers are eligible for DVD update shipments, see below for details.

Notes:

  • Eligible subscribers are not required to receive DVD update shipments. Many subscribers elect to not receive these since everything is available online and they can burn only the DVDs they need.
  • Organizations purchasing subscriptions through Volume Licensing are eligible for one set of DVD update shipments per subscription level purchased. For example, an organization that purchases 5 licenses of Visual Studio Professional with MSDN Premium and 20 licenses of MSDN Operating Systems would be entitled to one set of DVD update shipments for Visual Studio Professional with MSDN Premium and one set for MSDN Operating Systems.
  • Microsoft Volume Licensing customers can purchase additional DVD update shipments as needed. The product is called “Subscription Kit” on the Volume Licensing price lists and is sold in months of coverage units so you should purchase the number of months remaining on your VL agreement to cover any quarterly shipments that occur. Anyone using the DVDs must have the appropriate MSDN subscription license since these kits do not provide a license for use of the software.

The product is called “Comprehensive Kit” on the Volume Licensing price lists. Comprehensive Kits are available for all subscription levels, even those with no complimentary media. Anyone using the DVDs must have the appropriate MSDN subscription license since these kits do not provide a license for use of the software.
