About the Unit field on the Sales tax codes form

Applies To: Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R3, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Feature Pack, Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012

You must fill in the Unit field in the Sales tax codes form in the following situations:

  • The value in the Origin field is Amount per unit.

  • The value in the Marginal base field is Net amount per unit.

  • The value in the Marginal base field is Gross amount per unit.

Duty or sales tax as fixed amount per unit

You can calculate duties and sales taxes based on a fixed amount per unit, such as 10.00 for each unit.

Sales tax is frequently calculated based on the net amount, and the duty amount is added after this calculation.

The duty amount is added to the net amount before the sales tax is calculated if the selected sales tax code is set up as follows on the Calculation FastTab in the Sales tax codes form:

  • Amount per unit is selected in the Origin field.

  • The Calculate before sales tax check box is selected.

Example

Net amount = 10.00

Duty amount = 10.00 each

Sales tax = 25%

If the Calculate before sales tax check box is selected:

Sales tax = (10.00 + 10.00) x 25% = 5.00

Duty = 10.00

Total amount = 10.00 + 10.00 + 5.00 = 25.00

If the Calculate before sales tax check box is not selected:

Sales tax = 10.00 x 25% = 2.50

Duty = 10.00

Total amount = 10.00 + 10.00 + 2.50 = 22.50

Unit conversion

If the transaction, such as a sales order, is expressed in another unit, it is converted automatically according to the setup in the Unit conversions form.

Example

Your legal entity sells cookies in boxes, with 100 cookies in each box. The duty for cookies is 0.10 each.

In the Unit conversions form, you have specified that 1 box = 100 pieces.

You create a sales order for one box of cookies. To calculate the duty, one box is converted to 100 pieces. 100 pieces is multiplied with the duty of 0.10 each, so that the total duty is 10.00.
