Performance is a fundamental metric representing system responsiveness and productivity. It has been directly tied to customer satisfaction, and bad performance is usually an adoption blocker for a product. This dev center will help you get on board with the Windows Performance Toolkit, which lets you analyze performance aspects of Windows systems, from a low powered mobile uPC to an 128-way server and beyond.

Windows Performance Analysis Toolkit (WPT) for Windows Developer Preview
The new Windows Performance Analysis Toolkit (WPT), included with the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK), makes performance issues easier to diagnose. The toolkit includes the following:

  • Windows Performance Recorder (WPR) extends Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) by capturing detailed system and application behavior and resource usage either from the command line or a new graphical user interface. The previous command-line tool, Xperf, is still distributed with the toolkit for compatibility with existing scripts. For more information, see Windows Performance Recorder.
  • Windows Performance Analyzer (WPA) is a powerful tool used to review aspects of performance on Windows. WPA opens event trace log files and displays performance data in graphs and tables so that you can easily see where to investigate potential issues. For more information, see Windows Performance Analyzer.

MSDN subscribers can get the ADK here.

Windows Performance Toolkit (WPT) v5 forum
A forum for discussions on WPT for Windows Developer Preview is now available, where you can learn and share tips and tricks about how to use the new Windows 8 performance capture and analysis tools.

Windows Performance Analysis Toolkit
The Windows Performance Toolkit is designed for analysis of a wide range of performance problems, including application start times, boot issues, deferred procedure calls and interrupt activity (DPCs and ISRs), system responsiveness issues, application resource usage, and interrupt storms.
