Start using the BizTalk Services SDK
Updated: November 21, 2013
BizTalk Services enables you to have Business to Business Messaging, provides Rich Messaging Endpoints, and provides BizTalk Adapter Service to connect to on-premises LOB applications from the cloud. But how and where do we start creating solutions to achieve each of these business objectives?
For business-to-business messaging, BizTalk Services provides a portal where you can manage your trading partners and configure agreements between them. For more information, see Configuring Components for B2B Messaging on BizTalk Services Portal.
Even though rich messaging endpoints and connectivity to on-premise LOB applications are two separate offerings from BizTalk Services, more often than not, they will be used together to configure an end-to-end message flow. For example, a message will be sent to an XML bridge, which will process it and send it over to the BizTalk Adapter Service component, which will eventually update the backend LOB application accordingly. BizTalk Services provides a Visual Studio project template called BizTalk Services that can be used to configure rich messaging endpoints (XML bridges). You can use the BizTalk Services project template to create an end-to-end BizTalk Services application flow including message sources, bridges, and destinations that may include other Service Bus entities like queues, topics, relay endpoints, etc. Similarly, you have a Visual Studio Server Explorer plug-in to create and manage connectivity to on-premise LOB applications from the BizTalk Services application. For more information, see Visual Studio project design surface in BizTalk Services.
Prerequisites for Configuring a BizTalk Services Application
You must meet the following prerequisites before you can start creating BizTalk Services applications.
To start creating BizTalk Services applications, install BizTalk Services SDK. For more information, see Development environment: Installing Windows Azure BizTalk Services SDK.
If you want to extend the reach of your BizTalk Services applications to on-premises LOB applications like SQL Server, SAP, etc, install BizTalk Adapter Service. For more information on BizTalk Adapter Service, see BizTalk Adapter Service. To install BizTalk Adapter Service, see Runtime environment: Installing BizTalk Adapter Service.
You must have a valid Access Control and Service Bus namespace with credentials.
